In spite of how insurmountable and how challenging they seem, we must face them with true conviction. 2. Frame the quote you choose and copy it word for word on the lines below. Begin with one of these frames: (According to…; X once stated….; An anonymous author once said….; An unknown critic once argued….;) William Shakespeare once said, “This above all, to thine own self, be true.” 3. Write your own interpretation of the quote you choose from above. Begin with one of these: (This quote means that….; This suggests that……..; In other words……; This quote implies that…) This quote implies that despite all the trials and tribulations you may face in life, you must always follow your conscience and do the right thing. (Meaning of quote) OR This quote means that regardless of the difficult circumstances we may encounter in life, we must always be honest with ourselves and do the right thing. 4. Write a statement explaining how the author uses the 3 literary elements you chose to illustrate the meaning of the quote. In your statement be sure to include the a) title of novel, b) genre, c) author, d) and the 3 literary terms and e) intertwine the meaning of the quote. Laurie Halse Anderson uses characterization, symbolism and conflict throughout the realistic fiction Speak, to illustrate that despite all the trials and tribulations one may face, s/he must always listen to his/her inner self and do what is morally acceptable. OR Throughout the realistic fiction Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson applies characterization, symbolism and conflict to demonstrate that regardless of how difficult the circumstances a person may encounter in life, s/he must remain true to his/her beliefs. 5. Explain why the meaning of the quote is valid/true/applies/relevant/significant to the novel. The meaning of the quote is relevant to the novel Speak because the protagonist and other characters followed their heart and did what was right even when the odds were stacked against them. OR This quote is valid in the novel Speak because some characters stood up for what they believed in despite the challenges they faced. Paragraph 2 a) Explain the 1st literary term the author uses and how it uses illustrates the quote. The first literary term Anderson uses throughout the novel is characterization. She utilizes it to illustrate the courage and tenacity Mr. Freeman, David Petrakis and Melinda displayed when they followed their hearts and did what was right by standing up for others and for themselves against the school board, Mr. Neck and Andy Evans. OR Anderson uses characterization throughout the novel to illustrate how thoughtful and brave Mr. Freeman, David and Melinda were when they followed their heart and did what they felt was right by standing up to the school board, to Mr. Neck and for themselves. OR Characterization is the first literary element Anderson employs throughout the novel to demonstrate the determination and courage Mr. Freeman and David displayed when they stood up for Melinda and the other students. b) Give a background of the first piece of textual evidence the author uses to illustrate or connect to the meaning of the quote. Then, write it directly from the novel with the page #. Mr. Freeman was Melinda’s inspiring and very affectionate arts teacher who always saw the best in his students and encourages them to be creative and express themselves freely. Despite the fact that the school board wanted to limit his supplies, he still finds a way to allow his students to have fun and enjoy his art class. Evidence 1 According to page 10, “Welcome to the only class that will teach you how to survive. Welcome to art. This is where you can find your soul if you dear. Where you can touch that part of you that you’ve never dared look at before.” c) Explain the meaning of the textual evidence and how it connects with the quote. This demonstrates that Mr. Freeman is a hospitable character who appreciates and motivates his students to perform well and he provides a warm and welcoming environment where they felt comfortable to explore and express themselves freely. Evidence (E) 2 d) Give a background of the second piece of textual evidence the author uses to illustrate or connect to the meaning of the quote. Then, write it directly from the novel with the page #. Another character who demonstrated the meaning of this quote is David Petrakis. He is Melinda’s lab partner who was outspoken and courageous enough to stand up to Mr. Neck against his racist and xenophobic comments in class. Evidence 2 Page 56 states, “You opened a debate. You can’t close it just because it’s not going your way…….I am a citizen with the same rights as your son, or you. As a citizen and as a student, I am protesting the tone of this lesson as racist, intolerant and xenophobic.” Analysis (A) 2 Explain the meaning of the quote. This clearly shows that David’s bold and forthright personality allowed him to confront Mr. Neck about his obnoxious comments concerning immigrants. He stood up to Mr. Neck and for the rest of the class when everyone else was too scared to do so. e) Give a background of the third piece of textual evidence the author uses to illustrate or connect to the meaning of the quote. Then, write it directly from the novel with the page # Despite the fact that Melinda was consistently harassed and traumatized throughout most of her high school years, she finally found the courage and strength to fight back and took control of her life. She eventually stood up to Andy, her greatest nemesis, and brought him to his knees. Evidence 3 Page 194-195 states, “He curses and turns, his fist coming, coming. An explosion in my head and blood in my mouth. He hits me……….My fingers wove overhead, looking for a branch, a limb, something to hang on to. A block of wood- the base of my turkey-bone sculpture. I slammed it against the Maya’s poster, I hear a crunch…..ITs hand leaves my throat and attacks my body. I hit the wood against the post and the mirror under it, again. Shards glass slid down the wall and into the sink……… I reached in and wraps my fingers around a triangular pieces of glass. I hold it to Andy Evan’s neck. He freezes. I push just hard enough to raise just one drop of blood. He raises his arms over his head… His lips are paralyzed. He couldn’t speak.” Explain the meaning of the textual evidence. This illustrates that although Melinda has endured overwhelming oppression and antagonism from most of her school community, with perseverance and courage, she was able to fight back. She subdued Andy Evans, her rapist and greatest nemesis who traumatized and antagonized her for most of her high school years. By regaining her courage and strength which he had stolen, she rendered him powerless and speech as she was in most of the novel. Evident/Clearly/As you can see/Consequently…….. (Use one of these terms to connect to the meaning of the quote). As you can see, Mr. Freeman, David Petrakis, and Melinda all remained true to themselves and followed their hearts and did what they felt was right in the end. Paragraph 3 a) Explain the 2nd literary term the author uses and how she uses it to demonstrate the quote. Symbolism is another literary element the author uses throughout the novel to establish the idea that the protagonist always listens to her gut instincts and do what was right and would protect and preserve her sanity. b) Give a background of the first piece of textual evidence the author uses to illustrate or connect to the meaning of the quote. Then, write it directly from the novel with the page #. Three commanding symbols Anderson widely applied to the novel were tree, closet and mirror. They exhibit how the protagonist exercised resilience and courage fought to beat the odds and regain control of her life. The tree represented Melinda’s life and all the transformations she’s been through. Evidence and Explanation Near the beginning of the story, Melinda chose a tree as her yearlong project. She tried to put it back because drawing trees was easy and she knew how to draw them when she was in the second grade, but Mr. Freeman told her it was her destiny. Of course, that tree symbolizes everything which transpired in Melinda’s life. It represented the happy, innocent phase when she enjoyed the color pink and thought roses were beautiful, to the night she was raped by Andy Evans at the end of year school party and her life was almost completely destroyed from that emotional and psychological trauma, to her struggling to draw a tree because her life was in a turmoil and she was constantly humiliated and isolated by everybody around her. It also represented the phase where she tried to draw trees that were almost dead because she felt like she was dying under the pressure of wanting to tell someone about the rape aa well as the mental and emotional upheaval going on inside of her but she didn’t have the courage nor the strength to do so. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Background of evidence The janitor’s closet is another symbol which represented a place of safety and comfort for Melinda; a place where she could be herself and do things on her own terms. Evidence For instance, page 51 states, “There is a beast in my gut, I can hear it scraping away at the inside of my ribs……My closet is a good thing, a quiet place that helps me hold these thoughts inside my head where no one can hear them.” c) Explain the meaning of the textual evidence and how it connects with the quote. This indicates that when Melinda is experiencing emotional and psychological trauma, she seeks refuge in the janitor’s closet. There she can isolate herself from the rest of the world and be at peace, away from all judgement and ridicule until she is ready to follow her heart and reveal her big secret. Evidence (E) 2 d) Give a background of the second piece of textual evidence the author uses to illustrate or connect to the meaning of the quote. Then, write it directly from the novel with the page #. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Analysis (A) 2 Explain the meaning of the quote. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Evidence (E) 3 e) Give a background of the third piece of textual evidence the author uses to illustrate or connect to the meaning of the quote. Then, write it directly from the novel with the page # __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Analysis (A) 3 Explain the meaning of the textual evidence. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Evident/Clearly/As you can see/Consequently…….. (Use one of these terms to connect to the meaning of the quote). __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 4 Point 3 a) Explain the 3rd literary element the author uses and how she uses it to demonstrate the quote. The final literary element Anderson applied in the novel is conflict. It was used to highlight the physical and emotional turmoil the main character encountered and how she made the right decisions to fight against those sinister forces and free herself from the pain and torture. b) Give a background of the first piece of textual evidence the author uses to illustrate or connect to the meaning of the quote. Then, write it directly from the novel with the page #. IT, otherwise known as Andy Evans, Beast, Monster, is the root cause of all of Melinda’s troubles. It was his assault on Melinda at the end of year party which sent her into a downward spiral and left her life in shambles. According to page 45, “I see IT in the hallway. IT goes to Merryweather…… IT is my nightmare and I can’t wake up. IT sees me. IT smiles and winks. Good thing my lips are stitched together or I’d throw up.” c) Explain the meaning of the textual evidence and how it connects with the quote. It is obvious from this piece of evidence that Andy is mentally torturing Melinda. It has gotten so unbearable for her that she thinks that even in her sleep, he is tormenting her and she is powerless and unable to escape it. Then, write it directly from the novel with the page #. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Analysis (A) 3 Explain the meaning of the textual evidence. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Evident/Clearly/As you can see/Consequently…….. (Use one of these terms to connect to the meaning of the quote). __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 5 - Conclusion: a) Restate the thesis in the introduction, but do NOT use the same wording as the original one. To demonstrate how some characters followed their hearts and did what they felt was right even when the odds were stacked against them, Laurie Halse Anderson deploys characterization, conflict and symbolism in her literary fiction, Speak. b) Repeat the quote (verbatim) along with who said it. According to William Shakespeare, “This above all, to thine own self, be true.” c) Make a broad statement about life/society to reflect the meaning of the quote. (Use one of these to begin this statement- All in all…, Overall…., To sum it up…., In the final analysis…..) In the final analysis, the world is made up of good and bad characters which all human beings have to confront to navigate their way around. It therefore means that they will all have to rely on their own ethical beliefs in order to make the right judgement calls. Critical Lens Essay Altogether In life, people must always stand true to what they believe in, despite the challenges they may face. William Shakespeare once said, “This above all, to thine own self, be true.” This quote implies that despite all the trials and tribulations you may face in life, you must always obey your conscience and do the right thing. Laurie Halse Anderson uses characterization, symbolism and conflict throughout the realistic fiction Speak, to illustrate that despite all the trials and tribulations you may face in life, you must always obey your conscience and do the right thing. This quote is valid the novel Speak because several characters followed their heart and did what was right even when the odds were stacked against them. The first literary element Anderson uses throughout the novel is characterization. She utilizes it to show that no matter what happens in life or in literature, people must always follow their gut instincts and do what is right. Three characters who exemplify the spirit of the quote are Mr. Freeman, David Petrakis and Melinda. Mr. Freeman was Melinda’s inspiring and very welcoming arts teacher who always saw the best in his students and encourages them to be creative and express themselves freely. According to page 10, “Welcome to the only class that will teach you how to survive. Welcome to art. This is where you can find your soul if you dear. Where you can touch that part of you that you’ve never dared look at before.” This demonstrates that Mr. Freeman is a hospitable character who appreciates and motivates his students to perform well. He provides a welcoming environment where they felt comfortable to explore and express themselves freely. Another character who demonstrated the meaning of this quote is David Petrakis. He is Melinda’s lab partner who was outspoken and courageous enough to stand up to Mr. Neck against his racist and xenophobic comments in class. Page 56 states, “You opened a debate. You can’t close it just because it’s not going your away…….I am a citizen with the same rights as your son, or you. As a citizen and as a student, I am protesting the tone of this lesson as racist, intolerant and xenophobic.” This clearly shows that David’s bold and forthright personality allowed him to confront Mr. Neck about his obnoxious comments concerning immigrants. He stood up to Mr. Neck and for the rest of the class when everyone else was too scared to do so. Despite the fact that Melinda was consistently harassed and traumatized throughout most of her high school years, she finally found the courage and strength to fight back and took control of her life. She eventually stood up to Andy, her greatest nemesis, and brought him to his knees. In addition, pages 194-195 state, “He curses and turns, his fist coming, coming. Shards of glass slid down the wall and into the sink……… I reached in and wraps my fingers around a triangular pieces of glass. I hold it to Andy Evan’s neck. He freezes. I push just hard enough to raise just one drop of blood. He raises his arms over his head… His lips are paralyzed. He couldn’t speak.” This illustrates that although Melinda has endured overwhelming oppression and antagonism from most of her school community, with perseverance and courage, she was able to fight back. She subdued Andy Evans, her greatest terror and he became powerless and silent as she was in most of the novel. As you can see, Mr. Freeman, David Petrakis, and Melinda all remained true to themselves and followed their hearts and did what they felt was right in the end. Symbolism is another literary element the author uses throughout the novel to establish the idea that a person must always listen to his/her gut instincts and do the right thing. The symbols closet, tree and mirror are widely used in the novel. The janitor’s closet represented a place of safety and comfort for Melinda; a place where she could be herself and do things on her own terms. For instance, page 51 states, “There is a beast in my gut, I can hear it scraping away at the inside of my ribs……My closet is a good thing, a quiet place that helps me hold these thoughts inside my head where no one can hear them.” This indicates that when Melinda is experiencing emotional and psychological trauma, she seeks refuge in the janitor’s closet. There she can isolate herself from the rest of the world and be at peace, away from judgement and ridicule until she is ready to follow her heart and reveal her big secret. (NB. Only one piece of evidence, background information and explanation was used in this paragraph to give you an idea of how to construct yours. You must follow a similar pattern and include all the necessary pieces of information in each of yours.) The final literary element Anderson applied in the novel is conflict. It was used to highlight the physical and emotional turmoil the main character encountered and how she made the right decisions to fight against those sinister forces and free herself from the pain and torture. Good thing my lips are stitched together or I’d throw up.” It is obvious from this piece of evidence that Andy is mentally torturing Melinda. It has gotten so unbearable for her that she thinks that even in her sleep, he is tormenting her and she is powerless and unable to escape it. NB. The above paragraph is also incomplete. You must follow a similar pattern and include all the required information in yours. To demonstrate how some characters followed their heart and did what they felt was right even when the odds were stacked against them, Laurie Halse Anderson employs characterization, conflict and symbolism in her literary fiction, Speak. According to William Shakespeare, “This above all, to thine own self, be true.” In the final analysis, the world is made up of good and bad characters of which all human beings have to confront to navigate their our way around. It therefore means that they will all have to rely on their own ethical beliefs in order to make the right judgement calls. The novel Speak shows that the majority of conflicts that are found in literature feature a battle between wickedness and goodness. One way that Speak proves this point is through characterization. Characterization is the method through which an author creates characters by indirectly showing the effect that characters have on others, and by highlighting the characters’ speech, thoughts, actions, and physical appearance. Throughout the novel, Melinda Sordino, the novel’s protagonist, is characterized as a young woman who is isolated, depressed, and alone. Her ex-friends no longer speak to her. At the start of the novel, Melinda is on her way to school on the first day. As her former friends board the school bus, she attempts to make eye contact, but she is rebuffed when her friends refuse to look in her direction or acknowledge her existence. Melinda is this case represents the good while her friends are seen in a negative light. Melinda relays through her sadness on page 3 that she is the only person “sitting alone.” Additionally, on page 5, Melinda encounters Rachel again, and when the girls make eye contact, Rachel mouths, “I hate you.” Finally, the contradiction of good versus evil is evident when Melinda, who is a social outcast, enters the school cafeteria. She is unsure and uncertain about her role in the school and does not feel a part of the school community, again meets with “evil” when she is hit square in the chest with a lump of mashed potatoes. Then, the entire student body begins to laugh at her. The above evidence highlights the fact that there is a battle between righteousness and corruption. December 20, 2019 Complete the first draft of the critical lens essay. The essay contains 5 paragraphs and will be collected and graded on Tuesday, January 2, 2019. Introduction Introduction (Paragraph #1) A) Copy the quotation word for word. X once said,/ According to X,/ An anonymous author once stated, /An anonymous critic once said, /It has been said that/According to X /,“……………………………………..................” B) Write your own interpretation This quotation means/suggests/implies that/In other words………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… C) Explain how the interpretation relates to the quote This quote is true/valid/justifiable/meaningful/credible/logical because it is often found to be true in literature OR in real life. D.)In the ………………………..(genre) novel (title on novel) …………………………….( author) uses …………………………(1st literary term), ………………………………… (2nd literary term) and ………………………..(3rd lit term) to prove /demonstrate/illustrate how/that ……………………………………………………………………………………………………… Example: An anonymous critic once stated, all conflict in literature is in its simplest form a struggle between good and evil. This quotation means that within written texts, the main focus of the plot is to highlight the challenges between wickedness and righteousness. This statement is valid because not only does it hold true in real life, but also in the texts that individuals read on a regular basis. In the realistic fiction novel, Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson utilizes characterization, conflict, and theme to prove that literature often focuses on the battle between malevolence and morality. Body Paragraph (BP) 1: YOU CAN SEE AN EXAMPLE OF THIS BY COPYING AND PASTING THE FOLLOWING LINK: https://www.slideshare.net/gueste84433645/critical-lens-pt-b Name of 1st literary element and definition (IN THE ORDER IN WHICH EACH ONE APPEARS IN YOUR INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH; In other words, if you have listed characterization first, that would be discussed in Body Paragraph 1). A.) Include a topic sentence: The novel __________________ shows that _________________(this is a restatement of YOUR INTERPRETATION OF THE QUOTE. DO NOT WRITE THE ORIGINAL VERSION DOWN.) B.) Transition statement: One way that ________________ (insert either the author's last name OR the title of the novel here) proves this point is through _________________ (insert the literary element here (characterization, conflict, theme, setting, symbolism, imagery, irony.) C.) Provide a definition for literary element #1 D.) Provide 3 strong pieces of textual evidence from the novel and page # E.)Explain how the examples prove OR disprove the meaning of the quote BP # 1 SAMPLE The novel Speak shows/illustrates the idea that a large majority of printed works explore the concept of competing forces sparring against one another to become the dominant entity. One way that Anderson does this is through the use of characterization. Characterization is the method by which an author develops and describes characters both directly and indirectly. One example of this can be found on page three when Melinda is aboard the school bus heading to school on the fist day. Her old friends are characterized indirectly as mean and heartless because they no longer speak with her because of an unfortunate event that occurred during the summer months. In fact, Rachel, Melinda's former friend mouths to her, "I hate you." This mean spirited behavior represents the evilness of Melinda's classmates. Melinda is the epitome of good and she struggle to maintain her composure as this unfortunate event occurs. Additionally, on page seven, Melinda arrives at the cafeteria one day and attempts to grab a bite to eat. As she attempts to do this a member of the basketball team, known as the "Basketball Pole spills mashed potatoes on the front of her shirt. This causes, " four hundred people to explode in laughter." This one again is a prototype of the maliciousness of Melinda's peers. Finally, (insert final example of characterization her.) BODY PARAGRAPH 2: Name of 2nd literary element and definition (IN THE ORDER IN WHICH EACH ONE APPEARS IN YOUR INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH; In other words, if you have listed characterization first, that would be discussed in Body Paragraph 2). A.) Include a topic sentence: The novel __________________ shows that _________________(this is a restatement of YOUR INTERPRETATION OF THE QUOTE. DO NOT WRITE THE ORIGINAL VERSION DOWN.) B.) Transition statement: One way that ________________ (insert either the author's last name OR the title of the novel here) proves this point is through _________________ (insert the literary element here (characterization, conflict, theme, setting, symbolism, imagery, irony.) C.) Provide a definition for literary element #2 D.) Provide 3 strong pieces of textual evidence from the novel and page # E.)Explain how the examples prove OR disprove the meaning of the quote NOTE BRIEFLY-- EACH OF THE BODY PARAGRAPHS FOLLOW THE SAME FORMAT. The only thing that changes is the type of evidence that you include. This is based on the literary elements that you select. Example: Theme- should provide three themes that are related to the novel and provide evidence as to why those themes are applicable. The evidence MUST be clearly explained. EXAMPLES: A.)One should always speak up in order to receive the necessary help to recover from difficult circumstances. B.) Do not allow others to create your identity/do not be afraid to be yourself. Body Paragraph 3: Name of 3rd literary element and definition (IN THE ORDER IN WHICH EACH ONE APPEARS IN YOUR INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH; In other words, if you have listed characterization first, that would be discussed in Body Paragraph 3). A.) Include a topic sentence: The novel __________________ shows that _________________(this is a restatement of YOUR INTERPRETATION OF THE QUOTE. DO NOT WRITE THE ORIGINAL VERSION DOWN.) B.) Transition statement: One way that ________________ (insert either the author's last name OR the title of the novel here) proves this point is through _________________ (insert the literary element here (characterization, conflict, theme, setting, symbolism, imagery, irony.) C.) Provide a definition for literary element #3 D.) Provide 3 strong pieces of textual evidence from the novel and page # E.)Explain how the examples prove OR disprove the meaning of the quote December 19, 2019 Name _______________________________ Class __________ Date __________________ Interpret three of the following critical lens quotations and provide a valid interpretation for each. Steps for Quote Interpretation 1.)Circle ALL of the key words that you think are IMPERATIVE for you to circle to interpret and fully understand the quote. 2.) Write each of the words that you have identified in step 1 one beneath the other. 3.)Replace the original words/ phrases with the synonyms that you have found in step 2 to create a quote of your own that mirrors(is similar) to the original. NOTE: DO NOT CHANGE THE MEANING OF THE QUOTATIONS WHEN YOU CREATE YOUR OWN IN STEP 3. 4.) Use the phrase, “This quote means..” to provide an explanation/analysis of the quote’s meaning. EXAMPLE: STEP 1: “In literature, evil often triumphs, but never conquers.” STEP 2: Literature- books, texts, written works Evil-wickedness, badness, wrongdoing Often-regularly, frequently Triumphs-victoriousness, successful, wins, succeeds Never-at no time, on no occasion Conquers-defeats, annihilates, masters, controls STEP 3: In books, wickedness frequently seems to win, but on no occasion does it fully gain control. STEP 4: This quote means that forces that are wicked may seem to overcome the good, but they are never able to defeat the positive.

Use the quotations below about the tree to write a response to each of the Speak excerpts. In your response, be sure to explain Melinda's emotional state and what the quote reveals about her and her feelings. Each response MUST be 1 paragraph in length (one paragraph per quotation). Quote 1: "For a solid week, ever since the pep rally, I've been painting watercolors of trees that have been hit by the lightning. I try to paint them so they are nearly dead, but not totally. Mr. Freeman doesn't say a word to me about them. He just raises his eyebrows. One picture is so dark you can barely see the tree at all. (pages 30-31). Quote 2: I tune out and focus on my doodle, a pine tree. I've been trying to carve a linoleum block in art class. The problem with the block is that there is no way to correct mistakes. Every mistake I make is frozen in the picture. So, I have to think ahead. EXAMPLE: But when I try to carve it, it looks like a dead tree, toothpicks, a child’s drawing. I can’t bring it to life. ( Page 78) Melinda is currently experiencing depression and trauma. In this part of the text she speaks of carving images during art class. This reveals that she wants to cut out or get rid of the negative experiences that have impacted her life. She wants to be “perfect” and go back to her old way of life because she is currently broken. Emotionally, Melinda feels dead on the inside. She indicates that she cannot bring the tree to life which reveals that she feels like a shadow/portion of who she used to be. Bronx, NY 10475 September 19, 2019 SAMPLE INTRODUCTION Dear Readers, I have recently been promoted to chief editor at Martin’s Delightful Book Publishers. As part of my first assignment, I have been asked to read and review one of three books that have recently been published. The one that I have selected is the jaw-dropping, intriguing, and thrilling non-fiction book, The Lost Boy by Dave Pelzer. The main character, Dave, was severely abused by his alcoholic and mentally-ill mother. There were many days when Dave went without food. His father did little to intervene on his behalf. Eventually, young Dave ends up in California’s foster care system. I would rate this novel a 10 out of 10 stars because the details will keep you on the edge of your seat. SAMPLE PARAGRAPH 3 While there are many characters throughout the novel, the one that was most memorable was Ms. Gold. She exhibited a number of attributes/characteristics. Ms. Gold was kind, compassionate, and trustworthy. An example of her kind spirit can be found on page 46. During the events found in this section, Ms. Gold comforted Dave after he began to cry during one of their meetings. This shows/highlights/demonstrates/ exemplifies/reveals/indicates/exhibits/expresses/ signifies Ms. Gold’s caring demeanor. Additionally, Ms. Gold is compassionate and often sat with Dave for long periods of time to ensure that he was okay. Finally, Ms. Gold can be identified as being trustworthy. When she holds the sessions with David, she promises that she will not betray him by telling his secrets, and she keeps her vow. This clearly highlights her reliability as a character. IN A GENERAL WAY, RESTATE YOUR TOPIC AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT, 2.)RESTATE YOUR THESIS/CLAIM 3.)ADDRESS OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS AND EXPLAIN WHY READERS SHOULD ALIGN WITH YOUR POSITION 4.)CALL FOR ACTION OR OVERVIEW FUTURE RESEARCH POSSIBILITIES. SAMPLE CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH THE DEATH PENALTY IN THE UNITED STATES IS A TOPIC THAT IS HOTLY DEBATED. OPPONENTS BELIEVE THAT THIS METHOD OF PUNISHMENT IS BARBARIC, UNFAIR, AND INHUMANE. PROPONENTS CONTEND THAT CAPITAL PUNISHMENT SHOULD BE UTILIZED TO PROVIDE CLOSURE TO FAMILIES THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE. DESPITE THIS FACT, THE DEATH PENALTY SHOULD BE ENDED IN ALL 50 STATES BECAUSE IT UNFAIRLY TARGETS MINORITIES, IT DOES NOT BRING BACK THE LIFE OF THE DECEASED, AND IT DOES NOT SERVE AS A DETERRENT TO CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. LITERACY STEPS FOR WRITING COUNTERCLAIM STEP 1.) SELECT A "C" SENTENCE STARTER STEP 2.)SELECT AN "R" SENTENCE STARTER STEP 3.)PROVIDE TWO PIECES OF EVIDENCE THAT SHOWS THAT THE OPPOSITION'S ARGUMENT IS INVALID. (BE SURE THAT YOU ARE PROVIDING EVIDENCE THAT SHOWS THAT WHAT THE OPPOSING SIDE SAYS IS INCORRECT) STEP 4.) SUM UP YOUR IDEAS. IT SHOULD RESTATE THE REASON THAT YOU HAVE CHOSEN AND YOU SHOULD INDICATE THAT THE REASON THAT THE OPPOSITION GIVES IS INCORRECT. POSITION FOR THE EXAMPLE BELOW: I DISAGREE WITH THE DEATH PENALTY THE OPPOSITION MIGHT ARGUE THAT THE DEATH PENALTY DETERS CRIMINALS FROM ENGAGING IN ILLEGAL ACTIVITY (STEP 1). EVEN SO/WHILE IT MIGHT APPEAR THAT THIS IS THE CASE, THIS IS NOT COMPLETELY TRUE (STEP 2). A RECENT STUDY BY PROFESSOR MICHAEL RADELET AND TRACI LACOOK OF THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO FOUND THAT 88% OF THE NATION’S LEADING CRIMINOLOGISTS DO NOT BELIEVE THE DEATH PENALTY IS AN EFFECTIVE DETERRENT TO CRIME (STEP 3). FURTHERMORE,/MOREOVER,/ADDITIONALLY, A REPORT, RELEASED ON APRIL 18, 2012, BY THE PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMIES AND BASED ON A REVIEW OF MORE THAN THREE DECADES OF RESEARCH, CONCLUDED THAT STUDIES CLAIMING A DETERRENT EFFECT ON MURDER RATES FROM THE DEATH PENALTY ARE FUNDAMENTALLY FLAWED (STEP 3). THEREFORE, THE DEATH PENALTY SHOULD NOT BE UTILIZED AS MEANS OF PUNISHMENT IN THE UNITED STATES BECAUSE IT DOES NOT STOP PEOPLE FROM COMMITTING CRIMES. VIDE 2 PIECES OF EVIDENCE THAT SHOW THAT THE OPPOSING SIDE IS INCORRECT. IN OTHER WORDS, PROVIDE EVIDENCE THAT SHOWS THAT THE OPPOSITION'S ARGUMENT IS INVALID (STEP 4) MAY 3, 2019 COMPLETE THE INTRO, BODY PARAGRAPH 1, BODY PARAGRAPH 2, and BODY PARAGRAPH 3. THIS WILL BE COLLECTED ON MONDAY, MAY 6TH, 2019. BELOW IS A SAMPLE OF THE ESSAY'S FORMAT: QUESTION: IS SOCIAL MEDIA MORE HARMFUL OR MORE DETRIMENTAL TO AMERICA’S TEENS? CLAIM: SOCIAL MEDIA IS MORE DETRIMENTAL TO AMERICAN TEENS. REASON 1: SOCIAL MEDIA IS ASSOCIATED WITH PERSONALITY AND BRAIN DISORDERS. REASON 2: SOCIAL MEDIA CAN PROMOTE/INCREASE INSTANCES OF BULLYING REASON 3: SOCIAL MEDIA CAN CAUSE A DRAIN ON STUDENT TIME AND CAN POTENTIALLY LEAD TO LOWER GRADES AS WELL AS THWART STUDENT SUCCESS. REASON 4: SOCIAL MEDIA MAY BE USED BY GANG MEMBERS TO FACILITATE CRIME. THESIS STATEMENT: THE OVERUSE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IS DETRIMENTAL TO AMERICAN TEENS BECAUSE IT MAY POTENTIALLY LEAD TO AN INCREASE IN PERSONALITY AND BRAIN DISORDERS, MAY INCREASE INSTANCES OF BULLYING, AND MAY BE USED BY GANG MEMBERS IN THE FACILITATION OF CRIMES. HOOK: STATISTICS/INTERESTING OR SHOCKING STATEMENT/DEFINITION/QUOTATION/QUESTION SELECTED HOOK (QUESTION): SOCIAL MEDIA HAS BECOME AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT OF THE TYPICAL AMERICAN HOUSEHOLD. BUT AT WHAT COST? DID YOU KNOW THAT 87% OF TEENS REPORTED BEING BULLIED BY A PEER? ALSO, WERE YOU AWARE THAT 35% OF EMPLOYERS HAVE DISCOVERED INFORMATION THAT HAS CAUSED THEM NOT TO HIRE A JOB CANDIDATE? INTRODUCTION: SOCIAL MEDIA HAS BECOME AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT OF THE TYPICAL AMERICAN HOUSEHOLD. WHILE THESE STATISTICS HIGHLIGHT THE NEGATIVITY ASSOCIATED WITH SOCIAL MEDIA, THERE ARE ALSO A NUMBER OF STATISTICS THAT SHOWCASE THE BENEFITS OF SOCIAL MEDIA USE. FOR EXAMPLE, ROUGHLY EIGHT-IN-TEN TEENS AGES 13 TO 17 (81%) SAY SOCIAL MEDIA MAKES THEM FEEL MORE CONNECTED TO WHAT’S GOING ON IN THEIR FRIENDS’ LIVES, WHILE APPROXIMATELY TWO-THIRDS SAY THESE PLATFORMS MAKE THEM FEEL AS IF THEY HAVE PEOPLE WHO WILL SUPPORT THEM THROUGH TOUGH TIMES. WITH THIS SEEMINGLY CONTRADICTORY DATA, JUST HOW DOES ONE DECIDE WHICH SCHOOL OF THOUGHT IS CORRECT? WHILE PROPONENTS TOUT THE BENEFITS OF SOCIAL MEDIA INCLUDING ENHANCED COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND THE ABILITY TO CONNECT WITH OTHERS AROUND THE WORLD, OPPONENTS SEE SOCIAL MEDIA AS DIVISIVE AND THE CATALYST FOR POOR STUDENT PERFORMANCE. WHILE THERE ARE SOME POSITIVE ASPECTS OF THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA, IT HAS A DECIDEDLY DETRIMENTAL IMPACT ON THE MOST VULNERABLE OF INDIVIDUALS-AMERICA’S NEXT GENERATION – ITS TEENS. SOCIAL MEDIA IS MUCH MORE HARMFUL TO THE NATION’S YOUTH BECAUSE REGULAR USE CONTRIBUTES TO PERSONALITY AND BRAIN DISORDERS, LEADS TO AN INCREASE IN OCCURRENCES OF BULLYING, AND IT DRAINS STUDENT TIME, WHICH CAN POTENTIALLY LEAD TO LOWER GRADES AS WELL AS A DECLINE IN STUDENT SUCCESS. BODY PARAGRAPH 1(REASON 1): REGULAR USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA MAY RESULT IN AN UPSURGE IN BRAIN AND PERSONALITY DISORDERS. ACCORDING TO THE ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA, OVERUSE OF THE INTERNET CAN, “CAUSE DEPRESSION, ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER, IMPULSIVE DISORDER, PARANOIA, AND LONELINESS.” ADDITIONALLY, ACCORDING TO RESULTS FROM A RECENT STUDY CONDUCTED BY THE ROYAL SOCIETY FOR PUBLIC HEALTH, SOCIAL NETWORK USAGE CAN RESULT IN FOMO, OR THE “FEAR OF MISSING OUT.” THIS PHENOMENON CAUSES SOCIAL MEDIA USERS TO EXPERIENCE INTENSE ANXIETY IF THEY BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE NOT PARTICIPATING IN EVENTS THAT ARE TAKING PLACE SOMEWHERE ELSE. FINALLY, IN 2014, A RESEARCH TEAM FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH’S SCHOOL OF MEDICINE ANALYZED 1,765 AMERICAN ADULTS AGED 14 THROUGH 19 YEARS OLD. THEY ASKED THE PARTICIPANTS TO ANSWER A SERIES OF QUESTIONS THAT DESCRIBE THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE AND ALSO TO DETERMINE THEIR RISK OF DEVELOPING EATING DISORDERED SYMPTOMS. THEIR FINDINGS REVEALED THAT THE SUBJECTS WHO SPENT THE MOST TIME ENGAGED WITH SOCIAL MEDIA EACH DAY HAD 2.2 TIMES THE RISK OF DEVELOPING EATING DISORDERS. ADDITIONALLY, THOSE WHO MOST FREQUENTLY CHECKED THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA FEEDS WEEKLY CARRIED 2.6 TIMES THE RISK. THE ABOVE EVIDENCE CLEARLY REVEALS THAT SOCIAL MEDIA USE SHOULD BE LIMITED TO PREVENT A SPIKE IN MENTAL AND MOOD DISORDERS. APRIL 29, 2019 LITERACY INTRO FORMAT -HOOK -BACKGROUNG INFO -DISCUSS BOTH SIDES (PROPONENTS & OPPONENTS) -THESIS STATEMENT INTRODUCTION IMAGINE BEING CONVICTED OF A CRIME THAT YOU DID NOT COMMIT. IMAGINE NOW SPENDING FIVE YEARS OF YOUR LIFE BEHIND BARS BECAUSE NO ONE BELIEVED YOUR CRIES OF INNOCENCE. SUCH IS THE CASE OF RODRICUS CRAWFORD. IN 2012, CRAWFORD WAS SENTENCED TO DEATH ON CHARGES THAT HE HAD KILLED HIS ONE-YEAR-OLD SON. THIS OCCURRED DESPITE THE FACT THAT AUTOPSY RESULTS SHOWED PERVASIVE BRONCHOPNEUMONIA. AFTER THE TRIAL, CRAWFORD'S APPEAL LAWYERS OBTAINED ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE FROM EXPERTS IN THE FIELDS OF PEDIATRIC PATHOLOGY, PEDIATRIC NEUROPATHOLOGY, AND PEDIATRIC INFECTIOUS DISEASE THAT THE CHILD HAD DIED OF NATURAL CAUSES. THE CADDO PARISH, LOUISIANA, DISTRICT COURT FORMALLY DISMISSED ALL CHARGES AGAINST RODRICUS CRAWFORD ON APRIL 17, 2017. CASES SUCH AS CRAWFORD’S HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF CAREFULLY SCRUTINIZING THE WAY IN WHICH CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IS DISPENSED IN THE UNITED STATES. THIS ISSUE HAS LONG BEEN A CONTROVERSIAL AND HOTLY-DEBATED TOPIC. IN 1608, GEORGE KENDALL BECAME THE FIRST PERSON EXECUTED IN THE COLONIES IN 1608. SINCE THAT TIME, THE DEATH PENALTY HAS GROWN IMMENSELY IN POPULARITY. THIRTY-ONE STATES CURRENTLY UTILIZE THE DEATH PENALTY WHILE NINETEEN DO NOT. DEATH BY ELECTROCUTION, FIRING SQUAD, AND LETHAL INJECTION ARE STILL USED TODAY. WHILE PROPONENTS OF THE DEATH PENALTY CITE THE FACT THAT THE DEATH PENALTY DETERS CRIMINALS FROM COMMITTING HEINOUS CRIMES, THE DEATH PENALTY SHOULD NOT BE THE ANSWER TO CORRECTING CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR. CAPITAL PUNISHMENT SHOULD NOT BE MANDATED IN ALL 50 STATES BECAUSE THERE ARE INNOCENT PEOPLE ON DEATH ROW, THE DEATH PENALTY IS CRUEL AND BARBARIC, AND IT IS COSTLY TO THE U.S. GOVERNMENT. BODY PARAGRAPH 1 FORMAT -TOPIC SENTENCE THAT DISCUSSES REASON #1 -EVIDENCE #1 -EXPLANATION THAT SHOWS HOW EVIDENCE #1 RELATES TO THE FIRST REASON THAT YOU HAVE GIVEN -EVIDENCE #2 -EXPLANATION THAT SHOWS HOW EVIDENCE #2 RELATES TO THE FIRST REASON THAT YOU HAVE GIVEN - EVIDENCE #3 -EXPLANATION THAT SHOWS HOW EVIDENCE #3 RELATES TO THE FIRST REASON THAT YOU HAVE GIVEN THE PREVALENCE OF INNOCENT INDIVIDUALS ON DEATH ROW IS THE FIRST REASON THAT CAPITAL PUNISHMENT SHOULD NOT BE UTILIZED AS A MEANS OF PUNISHING CRIMINALS. IN FACT, ACCORDING TO DEATHPENALTYINFO.ORG, AS OF MARCH 28, THERE HAVE BEEN 165 EXONERATIONS IN 28 DIFFERENT STATES. THIS STATISTIC HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF ELIMINATING THE DEATH PENALTY AS A METHOD FOR PENALIZING INMATES. EVEN ONE INNOCENT PERSON IS WORTH ABOLISHING THIS MEANS OF DISCIPLINE. FURTHERMORE, THE LIVES OF INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE LATER BEEN PROVEN INNOCENT HAVE BEEN DISRUPTED AND UNFAIRLY AND UNNECESSARILY ALTERED. ONE EXAMPLE OF THIS IS THE CASE OF CLEMENTE AGUIRRE WHO SPENT MORE THAN A DECADE ON FLORIDA’S DEATH ROW. IN JUNE OF 2004, AGUIRRE WAS ACCUSED OF MURDERING TWO OF HIS NEIGHBORS. DESPITE MAINTAINING HIS INNOCENCE WHEN HE WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED AT THE AGE OF 24, AGUIRRE WAS CONVICTED OF THE MURDERS AND SENTENCES TO DEATH IN 2006. IN 2016, AGUIRRE’S CONVICTION WAS OVERTURNED BY THE FLORIDA SUPREME COURT. CLEMENTE AGUIRRE’S SENTENCE TO DEATH AND SUBSEQUENT EXONERATION IS A SINGLE EXAMPLE OF A SIGNIFICANT FLAW IN AMERICA’S JUSTICE SYSTEM THAT MAY POTENTIALLY END THE LIVES OF INNOCENT MEN AND WOMEN. April 18, 2019 A.)Write the introductory paragraph of your argumentative essay. The format is as folllows: -hook (quote, vivid description, anecdote, definition, question, interesting fact/statistic -background information -Statement related to the TWO sides of the argument (Opponents & Proponents) -Thesis Statement (topic+opinion+3 reasons) EXAMPLE OF INTRODUCTION: Imagine being led down a long, dark hallway, that you know will result in your death. Imagine having a metal skullcap placed on you head, and various electrodes attached to your chest, groin, legs, and arms. A switch is then flipped and thousands of volts of electricity then course throughout your body. Sometimes the prisoner’s body catches fire and the smell of burning flesh permeates the chamber. This is the reality for many inmates who are sentenced to death by electrocution. The death penalty also known as capital punishment is used in 30 states. In more than half of these states, lethal injection is the preferred method. If this method is proven to be unconstitutional, alternatives vary by state. For example, inmates in New Hampshire may select death by hanging, while the firing squad is offered in Oklahoma and Utah. Opponents of capital punishment posit that this process is unfair, unjust, and uncivilized. Proponents maintain that the death penalty is an important tool for maintaining law and order. Despite these differences in opinion, capital punishment has proven to be cruel and inhumane, is unfairly imposed on African Americans, and does not serve as a deterrent to crime. SAMPLE BODY PARAGRAPH “In literature, evil often triumphs, but never conquers.” (characterization, symbolism, conflict, theme) The novel Speak showcases, highlights, legitimizes, validates, proves) that malignant forces often seem to be victorious, but they will never completely destroy. Laurie Halse Anderson uses conflict to legitimize this quotation. Conflict is confrontation or struggle between opposing forces. These include: man versus man, man versus self, man versus nature, and man versus society. Melinda experiences a number of conflicts throughout the text. One such example can be found on page 194. Melinda was inside of the janitor’s closet when she was suddenly attacked by the antagonist, Andy Evans. While the wickedness that was present in the form of Andy attempted to ruin Melinda’s life, it was unsuccessful. Melinda is able to defend herself by holding a shard of glass to Andy’s neck, which causes the evil to be annihilated. ONE WAY THAT THIS TEXT VALIDATES THIS POINT IS THROUGH CONFLICT. CONFLICT IS A CHALLENGE OR STRUGGLE BETWEEN OPPOSING FORCES.SPEAK IS A NOVEL THAT CENTERS AROUND THE MAIN CHARACTER, MELINDA SORDINO. MELINDA IS A TEENAGER WHO LIVES IN SYRACUSE, NEW YORK WHERE SHE ATTENDS MERRYWEATHER HIGH SCHOOL. MELINDA HAS TO UNDERGO MANY CONFLICTS IN WHICH SHE IS FORCED TO RELINQUISH SOME THINGS IN HER LIFE TO MAKE PROGRESS AND EXPERIENCE GROWTH. ONE EXAMPLE OF THIS CAN BE FOUND IN THE NOVEL ON PAGES 20 AND 21 WHEN THE READER SEES MELINDA GIVING UP A PREVIOUS RELATIONSHIP WITH HER EX-BEST-FRIEND, RACHEL/RACHELLE. THIS IS ESSENTIAL BECAUSE THIS SITUATION ALLOWED MELINDA TO TRULY GET A SENSE OF WHAT TRUE FRIENDSHIP IS. THIS EVENT IN THE TEXT IS BENEFICIAL TO MELINDA BECAUSE AS THE NOVEL PROGRESSES, SHE IS ABLE TO LEARN A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT ABOUT HERSELF AND IS ABLE TO MATURE AS THE SCHOOL YEAR ADVANCES.
