Document 3
Many Americans do not consider Christopher Columbus to be an American hero, and oppose the celebration of Columbus Day as a national holiday. The following is an excerpt of an online petition asking Congress to change the name of the holiday to "First Americans Day."
The “Columbus Day” holiday is the only national holiday that is overtly insulting to millions of Americans. It is now universally understood that Christopher Columbus did not “discover” the American continent. That concept is a “Euro-centric” one that is deeply insulting to American Indians and many native-born Americans of all cultures. It is also historically incorrect. American Indian people have been on this continent at least 10,000 years, and scientists have proven that numerous other explorers had arrived on this continent from other parts of the world long before Columbus. It is also now known that many of the things we once believed about Christopher Columbus were myths, and that much of what we did not know about him would seriously tarnish his image, to say the least. This petition, however, is not meant to be an attack on Christopher Columbus, but rather an appeal for a holiday that is not insulting to any American. American national holidays should be days that bring a sense of pride and togetherness for ALL Americans, and stem from an “American perspective.” “Columbus Day” fails that test on all counts.

Christopher Columbus kept a detailed record of his voyages to the New World. This is an excerpt from his journal on the day he first made contact with natives.
Saturday, 13 October 1492--At daybreak, great multitudes of men came to the shore… they came to the ship in canoes, made of a single trunk of a tree, wrought in a wonderful manner considering the country; some of them large enough to contain forty or forty-five men, others of different sizes down to those fitted to hold but a single person. They came loaded with balls of cotton, parrots, javelins, and other things too numerous to mention; these they exchanged for whatever we chose to give them. I was very attentive to them, and strove to learn if they had any gold. Seeing some of them with little bits of this metal hanging at their noses, I gathered from them by signs that by going southward or steering round the island in that direction, there would be found a king who possessed large vessels of gold, and in great quantities.

Joel Barlow was an early American poet who lived from 1754 to 1812. The following is an excerpt from his poem The Vision of Columbus which hailed the explorer as a hero.
This extraordinary man, who was now about twenty-seven years of age, appears to have united in his character every trait, and to have possessed every talent, requisite to form and execute the greatest enterprises. He was early educated in all the useful sciences that were taught in that day. He had made great proficiency in geography, astronomy and drawing, as they were necessary to his favorite pursuit of navigation. He had now been a number of years in the service of the Portuguese, and had acquired all the experience that their voyages and discoveries could afford. His courage and perseverance had been put to the severest test, and the exercise of every amiable and heroic virtue rendered him universally known and respected.
Such was the situation of Columbus, when he formed and thoroughly digested a plan, which, in its operation and consequences, unfolded to the view of mankind one half of the globe, diffused wealth and dignity over the other, and extended commerce and civilization through the whole.

Prince Henry the Navigator
Henry the Navigator was born in Porto, Portugal, in 1394. Although he was neither a sailor nor a navigator, he sponsored a great deal of exploration along the west coast of Africa. Under his patronage, Portuguese crews founded the country's first colonies and visited regions previously unknown to Europeans. Henry is regarded as an originator of the Age of Discovery and the Atlantic slave trade. Henry is often credited with beginning the Age of Discovery, the period during which European nations expanded their reach to Africa, Asia and the Americas. Prince Henry’s School of Navigation In 1419, Prince Henry opened a school of navigation in Sagres, Portugal after growing impatient with Portugal’s progress in exploring. Prince Henry’s school of navigation resulted in a breakthrough for Portuguese navigation. Sailors were educated and taught how to read and accurately draw maps (cartography), use navigational tools such as the astrolabe and comas, and learning how to sail the newly developed caravel. Before Prince Henry, sailors and navigators refused to sail toward Africa. They feared sea monsters and boiling water near the equator. In fact, no sailor had ever sailed into the “sea of Darkness,” which the Portuguese considered to be any part of the ocean south of 27 degrees north latitude (Cape Bojador). Prince Henry sent 14 expeditions into the “Sea of Darkness.” He even convinced some explorers to go further south. His efforts and patronage was the first step in finding the elusive, all water trade route to India for Portugal. The farthest point south that was reached during Henry’s lifetime was probably presentday Sierra Leone; after his death, the pace of progress in Portuguese exploration accelerated markedly, suggesting that the prince’s reputation as a patron of explorers has been exaggerated.
He had several goals for his expeditions:
1. his main focus with expeditions was trade
2. learn about Muslim power
3. take over Muslim trade routes
4. make alliances against Muslims with Christian rulers
5. establish Portuguese colonies 6. enter the gold trade
7. convert people to Christianity
Prince Henry the Navigator
1. Cartography – the art of map making
2. Astrolabe- An astrolabe is used by astronomers and navigators to measure the altitude above the horizon of a celestial body, day or night. It can be used to identify stars or planets, to determine local latitude given local time, to survey, or to triangulate.
3. Compass- A compass is an instrument used for navigation and orientation that shows direction relative to the geographic cardinal directions. Usually, a diagram called a compass rose shows the directions north, south, east, and west on the compass face as abbreviated initials Tool used for Exploration.

1.) IN A GENERAL WAY, RESTATE YOUR TOPIC AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT, 2.)RESTATE YOUR THESIS/CLAIM

4.)CALL FOR ACTION OR OVERVIEW FUTURE RESEARCH POSSIBILITIES.
SAMPLE CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH
THE DEATH PENALTY IN THE UNITED STATES IS A TOPIC THAT IS HOTLY DEBATED. OPPONENTS BELIEVE THAT THIS METHOD OF PUNISHMENT IS BARBARIC, UNFAIR, AND INHUMANE. PROPONENTS CONTEND THAT CAPITAL PUNISHMENT SHOULD BE UTILIZED TO PROVIDE CLOSURE TO FAMILIES THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE. DESPITE THIS FACT, THE DEATH PENALTY SHOULD BE ENDED IN ALL 50 STATES BECAUSE IT UNFAIRLY TARGETS MINORITIES, IT DOES NOT BRING BACK THE LIFE OF THE DECEASED, AND IT DOES NOT SERVE AS A DETERRENT TO CRIMINAL ACTIVITY.

STEPS FOR WRITING COUNTERCLAIM
STEP 1.) SELECT A "C" SENTENCE STARTER
STEP 2.)SELECT AN "R" SENTENCE STARTER
STEP 3.)PROVIDE TWO PIECES OF EVIDENCE THAT SHOWS THAT THE OPPOSITION'S ARGUMENT IS INVALID. (BE SURE THAT YOU ARE PROVIDING EVIDENCE THAT SHOWS THAT WHAT THE OPPOSING SIDE SAYS IS INCORRECT)
STEP 4.) SUM UP YOUR IDEAS. IT SHOULD RESTATE THE REASON THAT YOU HAVE CHOSEN AND YOU SHOULD INDICATE THAT THE REASON THAT THE OPPOSITION GIVES IS INCORRECT.
POSITION FOR THE EXAMPLE BELOW: I DISAGREE WITH THE DEATH PENALTY
THE OPPOSITION MIGHT ARGUE THAT THE DEATH PENALTY DETERS CRIMINALS FROM ENGAGING IN ILLEGAL ACTIVITY (STEP 1). EVEN SO/WHILE IT MIGHT APPEAR THAT THIS IS THE CASE, THIS IS NOT COMPLETELY TRUE (STEP 2). A RECENT STUDY BY PROFESSOR MICHAEL RADELET AND TRACI LACOOK OF THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO FOUND THAT 88% OF THE NATION’S LEADING CRIMINOLOGISTS DO NOT BELIEVE THE DEATH PENALTY IS AN EFFECTIVE DETERRENT TO CRIME (STEP 3).
FURTHERMORE,/MOREOVER,/ADDITIONALLY, A REPORT, RELEASED ON APRIL 18, 2012, BY THE PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMIES AND BASED ON A REVIEW OF MORE THAN THREE DECADES OF RESEARCH, CONCLUDED THAT STUDIES CLAIMING A DETERRENT EFFECT ON MURDER RATES FROM THE DEATH PENALTY ARE FUNDAMENTALLY FLAWED (STEP 3). THEREFORE, THE DEATH PENALTY SHOULD NOT BE UTILIZED AS MEANS OF PUNISHMENT IN THE UNITED STATES BECAUSE IT DOES NOT STOP PEOPLE FROM COMMITTING CRIMES (STEP 4).

QUESTION: IS SOCIAL MEDIA MORE HARMFUL OR MORE DETRIMENTAL TO AMERICA’S TEENS?
CLAIM: SOCIAL MEDIA IS MORE DETRIMENTAL TO AMERICAN TEENS.
REASON 1: SOCIAL MEDIA IS ASSOCIATED WITH PERSONALITY AND BRAIN DISORDERS.
REASON 2: SOCIAL MEDIA CAN PROMOTE/INCREASE INSTANCES OF BULLYING
REASON 3: SOCIAL MEDIA CAN CAUSE A DRAIN ON STUDENT TIME AND CAN POTENTIALLY LEAD TO LOWER GRADES AS WELL AS THWART STUDENT SUCCESS.
BODY REASON 4: SOCIAL MEDIA MAY BE USED BY GANG MEMBERS TO FACILITATE CRIME.
THESIS STATEMENT: THE OVERUSE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IS DETRIMENTAL TO AMERICAN TEENS BECAUSE IT MAY POTENTIALLY LEAD TO AN INCREASE IN PERSONALITY AND BRAIN DISORDERS, MAY INCREASE INSTANCES OF BULLYING, AND MAY BE USED BY GANG MEMBERS IN THE FACILITATION OF CRIMES.
HOOK: STATISTICS/INTERESTING OR SHOCKING STATEMENT/DEFINITION/QUOTATION/QUESTION
SELECTED HOOK (QUESTION): SOCIAL MEDIA HAS BECOME AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT OF THE TYPICAL AMERICAN HOUSEHOLD. BUT AT WHAT COST? DID YOU KNOW THAT 87% OF TEENS REPORTED BEING BULLIED BY A PEER? ALSO, WERE YOU AWARE THAT 35% OF EMPLOYERS HAVE DISCOVERED INFORMATION THAT HAS CAUSED THEM NOT TO HIRE A JOB CANDIDATE?
INTRODUCTION:
SOCIAL MEDIA HAS BECOME AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT OF THE TYPICAL AMERICAN HOUSEHOLD. WHILE THESE STATISTICS HIGHLIGHT THE NEGATIVITY ASSOCIATED WITH SOCIAL MEDIA, THERE ARE ALSO A NUMBER OF STATISTICS THAT SHOWCASE THE BENEFITS OF SOCIAL MEDIA USE. FOR EXAMPLE, ROUGHLY EIGHT-IN-TEN TEENS AGES 13 TO 17 (81%) SAY SOCIAL MEDIA MAKES THEM FEEL MORE CONNECTED TO WHAT’S GOING ON IN THEIR FRIENDS’ LIVES, WHILE APPROXIMATELY TWO-THIRDS SAY THESE PLATFORMS MAKE THEM FEEL AS IF THEY HAVE PEOPLE WHO WILL SUPPORT THEM THROUGH TOUGH TIMES. WITH THIS SEEMINGLY CONTRADICTORY DATA, JUST HOW DOES ONE DECIDE WHICH SCHOOL OF THOUGHT IS CORRECT? WHILE PROPONENTS TOUT THE BENEFITS OF SOCIAL MEDIA INCLUDING ENHANCED COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND THE ABILITY TO CONNECT WITH OTHERS AROUND THE WORLD, OPPONENTS SEE SOCIAL MEDIA AS DIVISIVE AND THE CATALYST FOR POOR STUDENT PERFORMANCE. WHILE THERE ARE SOME POSITIVE ASPECTS OF THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA, IT HAS A DECIDEDLY DETRIMENTAL IMPACT ON THE MOST VULNERABLE OF INDIVIDUALS-AMERICA’S NEXT GENERATION – ITS TEENS. SOCIAL MEDIA IS MUCH MORE HARMFUL TO THE NATION’S YOUTH BECAUSE REGULAR USE CONTRIBUTES TO PERSONALITY AND BRAIN DISORDERS, LEADS TO AN INCREASE IN OCCURRENCES OF BULLYING, AND IT DRAINS STUDENT TIME, WHICH CAN POTENTIALLY LEAD TO LOWER GRADES AS WELL AS A DECLINE IN STUDENT SUCCESS.
BODY PARAGRAPH 1(REASON 1):
REGULAR USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA MAY RESULT IN AN UPSURGE IN BRAIN AND PERSONALITY DISORDERS. ACCORDING TO THE ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA, OVERUSE OF THE INTERNET CAN, “CAUSE DEPRESSION, ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER, IMPULSIVE DISORDER, PARANOIA, AND LONELINESS.” ADDITIONALLY, ACCORDING TO RESULTS FROM A RECENT STUDY CONDUCTED BY THE ROYAL SOCIETY FOR PUBLIC HEALTH, SOCIAL NETWORK USAGE CAN RESULT IN FOMO, OR THE “FEAR OF MISSING OUT.” THIS PHENOMENON CAUSES SOCIAL MEDIA USERS TO EXPERIENCE INTENSE ANXIETY IF THEY BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE NOT PARTICIPATING IN EVENTS THAT ARE TAKING PLACE SOMEWHERE ELSE. FINALLY, IN 2014, A RESEARCH TEAM FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH’S SCHOOL OF MEDICINE ANALYZED 1,765 AMERICAN ADULTS AGED 14 THROUGH 19 YEARS OLD. THEY ASKED THE PARTICIPANTS TO ANSWER A SERIES OF QUESTIONS THAT DESCRIBE THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE AND ALSO TO DETERMINE THEIR RISK OF DEVELOPING EATING DISORDERED SYMPTOMS. THEIR FINDINGS REVEALED THAT THE SUBJECTS WHO SPENT THE MOST TIME ENGAGED WITH SOCIAL MEDIA EACH DAY HAD 2.2 TIMES THE RISK OF DEVELOPING EATING DISORDERS. ADDITIONALLY, THOSE WHO MOST FREQUENTLY CHECKED THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA FEEDS WEEKLY CARRIED 2.6 TIMES THE RISK. THE ABOVE EVIDENCE CLEARLY REVEALS THAT SOCIAL MEDIA USE SHOULD BE LIMITED TO PREVENT A SPIKE IN MENTAL AND MOOD DISORDERS.

INTRODUCTION
IMAGINE BEING CONVICTED OF A CRIME THAT YOU DID NOT COMMIT. IMAGINE NOW SPENDING FIVE YEARS OF YOUR LIFE BEHIND BARS BECAUSE NO ONE BELIEVED YOUR CRIES OF INNOCENCE. SUCH IS THE CASE OF RODRICUS CRAWFORD. IN 2012, CRAWFORD WAS SENTENCED TO DEATH ON CHARGES THAT HE HAD KILLED HIS ONE-YEAR-OLD SON. THIS OCCURRED DESPITE THE FACT THAT AUTOPSY RESULTS SHOWED PERVASIVE BRONCHOPNEUMONIA. AFTER THE TRIAL, CRAWFORD'S APPEAL LAWYERS OBTAINED ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE FROM EXPERTS IN THE FIELDS OF PEDIATRIC PATHOLOGY, PEDIATRIC NEUROPATHOLOGY, AND PEDIATRIC INFECTIOUS DISEASE THAT THE CHILD HAD DIED OF NATURAL CAUSES. THE CADDO PARISH, LOUISIANA, DISTRICT COURT FORMALLY DISMISSED ALL CHARGES AGAINST RODRICUS CRAWFORD ON APRIL 17, 2017. CASES SUCH AS CRAWFORD’S HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF CAREFULLY SCRUTINIZING THE WAY IN WHICH CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IS DISPENSED IN THE UNITED STATES. THIS ISSUE HAS LONG BEEN A CONTROVERSIAL AND HOTLY-DEBATED TOPIC. IN 1608, GEORGE KENDALL BECAME THE FIRST PERSON EXECUTED IN THE COLONIES IN 1608. SINCE THAT TIME, THE DEATH PENALTY HAS GROWN IMMENSELY IN POPULARITY. THIRTY-ONE STATES CURRENTLY UTILIZE THE DEATH PENALTY WHILE NINETEEN DO NOT. DEATH BY ELECTROCUTION, FIRING SQUAD, AND LETHAL INJECTION ARE STILL USED TODAY. WHILE PROPONENTS OF THE DEATH PENALTY CITE THE FACT THAT THE DEATH PENALTY DETERS CRIMINALS FROM COMMITTING HEINOUS CRIMES, THE DEATH PENALTY SHOULD NOT BE THE ANSWER TO CORRECTING CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR. CAPITAL PUNISHMENT SHOULD NOT BE MANDATED IN ALL 50 STATES BECAUSE THERE ARE INNOCENT PEOPLE ON DEATH ROW, THE DEATH PENALTY IS CRUEL AND BARBARIC, AND IT IS COSTLY TO THE U.S. GOVERNMENT.

THE PREVALENCE OF INNOCENT INDIVIDUALS ON DEATH ROW IS THE FIRST REASON THAT CAPITAL PUNISHMENT SHOULD NOT BE UTILIZED AS A MEANS OF PUNISHING CRIMINALS. IN FACT, ACCORDING TO DEATHPENALTYINFO.ORG, AS OF MARCH 28, THERE HAVE BEEN 165 EXONERATIONS IN 28 DIFFERENT STATES. THIS STATISTIC HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF ELIMINATING THE DEATH PENALTY AS A METHOD FOR PENALIZING INMATES. EVEN ONE INNOCENT PERSON IS WORTH ABOLISHING THIS MEANS OF DISCIPLINE. FURTHERMORE, THE LIVES OF INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE LATER BEEN PROVEN INNOCENT HAVE BEEN DISRUPTED AND UNFAIRLY AND UNNECESSARILY ALTERED. ONE EXAMPLE OF THIS IS THE CASE OF CLEMENTE AGUIRRE WHO SPENT MORE THAN A DECADE ON FLORIDA’S DEATH ROW. IN JUNE OF 2004, AGUIRRE WAS ACCUSED OF MURDERING TWO OF HIS NEIGHBORS. DESPITE MAINTAINING HIS INNOCENCE WHEN HE WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED AT THE AGE OF 24, AGUIRRE WAS CONVICTED OF THE MURDERS AND SENTENCES TO DEATH IN 2006. IN 2016, AGUIRRE’S CONVICTION WAS OVERTURNED BY THE FLORIDA SUPREME COURT. CLEMENTE AGUIRRE’S SENTENCE TO DEATH AND SUBSEQUENT EXONERATION IS A SINGLE EXAMPLE OF A SIGNIFICANT FLAW IN AMERICA’S JUSTICE SYSTEM THAT MAY POTENTIALLY END THE LIVES OF INNOCENT MEN AND WOMEN.

-hook (quote, vivid description, anecdote, definition, question, interesting fact/statistic
-background information
-Statement related to the TWO sides of the argument (Opponents & Proponents)
-Thesis Statement (topic+opinion+3 reasons)
EXAMPLE OF INTRODUCTION:
Imagine being led down a long, dark hallway, that you know will result in your death. Imagine having a metal skullcap placed on you head, and various electrodes attached to your chest, groin, legs, and arms. A switch is then flipped and thousands of volts of electricity then course throughout your body. Sometimes the prisoner’s body catches fire and the smell of burning flesh permeates the chamber. This is the reality for many inmates who are sentenced to death by electrocution. The death penalty also known as capital punishment is used in 30 states. In more than half of these states, lethal injection is the preferred method. If this method is proven to be unconstitutional, alternatives vary by state. For example, inmates in New Hampshire may select death by hanging, while the firing squad is offered in Oklahoma and Utah. Opponents of capital punishment posit that this process is unfair, unjust, and uncivilized. Proponents maintain that the death penalty is an important tool for maintaining law and order. Despite these differences in opinion, capital punishment has proven to be cruel and inhumane, is unfairly imposed on African Americans, and does not serve as a deterrent to crime.

“In literature, evil often triumphs, but never conquers.” (characterization, symbolism, conflict, theme)
The novel Speak showcases, highlights, legitimizes, validates, proves) that malignant forces often seem to be victorious, but they will never completely destroy. Laurie Halse Anderson uses conflict to legitimize this quotation. Conflict is confrontation or struggle between opposing forces. These include: man versus man, man versus self, man versus nature, and man versus society. Melinda experiences a number of conflicts throughout the text. One such example can be found on page 194. Melinda was inside of the janitor’s closet when she was suddenly attacked by the antagonist, Andy Evans. While the wickedness that was present in the form of Andy attempted to ruin Melinda’s life, it was unsuccessful. Melinda is able to defend herself by holding a shard of glass to Andy’s neck, which causes the evil to be annihilated.

EXAMPLE OF BP # 1:
THE NOVEL SPEAK DEMONSTRATES THAT IN ORDER TO GAIN WHAT WE TRULY DESIRE, WE MUST SOMETIMES GIVE UP WHAT WE HAVE. ONE WAY THAT THIS TEXT VALIDATES THIS POINT IS THROUGH CONFLICT. CONFLICT IS A CHALLENGE OR STRUGGLE BETWEEN OPPOSING FORCES.SPEAK IS A NOVEL THAT CENTERS AROUND THE MAIN CHARACTER, MELINDA SORDINO. MELINDA IS A TEENAGER WHO LIVES IN SYRACUSE, NEW YORK WHERE SHE ATTENDS MERRYWEATHER HIGH SCHOOL. MELINDA HAS TO UNDERGO MANY CONFLICTS IN WHICH SHE IS FORCED TO RELINQUISH SOME THINGS IN HER LIFE TO MAKE PROGRESS AND EXPERIENCE GROWTH. ONE EXAMPLE OF THIS CAN BE FOUND IN THE NOVEL ON PAGES 20 AND 21 WHEN THE READER SEES MELINDA GIVING UP A PREVIOUS RELATIONSHIP WITH HER EX-BEST-FRIEND, RACHEL/RACHELLE. THIS IS ESSENTIAL BECAUSE THIS SITUATION ALLOWED MELINDA TO TRULY GET A SENSE OF WHAT TRUE FRIENDSHIP IS. THIS EVENT IN THE TEXT IS BENEFICIAL TO MELINDA BECAUSE AS THE NOVEL PROGRESSES, SHE IS ABLE TO LEARN A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT ABOUT HERSELF AND IS ABLE TO MATURE AS THE SCHOOL YEAR ADVANCES.
